What brings you to the world of pruning?
Hey, It’s Maryann,
You signed up to receive the Lewocks Tree Studio newsletter a little while ago. Thank you!
You might be a home gardener, professional horticulturist or a curious soul who simply stumbled across my website and decided to subscribe, but no matter how you found me it’s always nice to have a little background on who you are letting into your inbox. This might give you some clues about how I found myself in the world of pruning trees.
My official bio: or more like half my life story!
I grew up in Missoula Montana surrounded by the vast nature of the Rocky Mountains. Upon graduating with a masters of architecture from Montana State University I moved to Portland Oregon and began my career as an architect with a design/build firm. In early 1999 I moved to Oakland California to further my architectural career. The influence of living in a mild climate and a dense metropolis led me to seek an active connection to what I thought of as an elusive environment. (It felt like eternal spring!) I began taking horticulture classes at Merritt College in Oakland where I discovered the Aesthetic Pruning program.
In 2005 I started my aesthetic pruning business and in 2009 volunteered to become chair of the exploratory committee for the formation of what was to become the Aesthetic Pruners Association. I have been an active member since co-founding the APA in 2010.
In 2015 I returned to Portland Oregon with my family. It is the perfect place for a tree lover and the seasons speak a littler louder for those of us who like that.
Every year I gave a few more presentations or classes and began to train other horticultural professionals to level up their pruning skills. The formation of Lewocks Tree Studio in 2023 became the new home/studio for these endeavors.
Some unofficial things about me...
I love chocolate chips cookies.
and
At one point my family had 4 house rabbits! They loved to snuggle with us (on their terms of course) and would run around the house performing bunny jumping antics until a breakfast of parsley was served.
That's it for now!
With much gratitude,
Maryann
P.S. Feel free to comment about how you found yourself in the world of pruning. I would love to know!
